Parting is such a sweet sorrow that I shall say goodnight till it be morrow.
-William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet
Goodbyes have this notorious reputation of being imbued with a melancholic spirit. This expression is so infamous that most who partake in its exchange either weep and burn bridges or listen to sad songs that permeate the radio. But goodbyes aren’t called good for nothing. In reality, goodbyes help us grow in more ways than one.
Goodbyes are a part of life. They are products of reality checks and the need to let go. They pave the way for new beginnings thereby allowing us to draw closer to our purpose in life. They also signify our self-respect to walk away from anything that no longer benefits us, grows us, or makes us happy. Bidding farewell to something or someone doesn’t mean giving up. It simply means moving forward and pressing on towards life’s goals while leaving a heavy baggage behind that has been dragging us down for so long. And if any of these rings a bell, you know it’s time to say goodbye.
The past months have been full of goodbyes for me. Goodbye to my work, to friends who were dear to me, to dreams that seem unreachable. But what’s interesting about goodbyes is that they do not always mean forever. So I guess, goodbye for now…until we meet again!
